Alicante is served by the international airport El Altet, the sixth airport in Spain in terms of passenger numbers (10 million per year), located 12 km from the city. Tourism: Being an important port city in Spain, Alicante Airport receives ten million international passengers annually, who are also heading to the nearby beaches of Costa Blanca. Over 3 million tourists visit Alicante Province each year alone. The number of monthly visits to Costa de Alicante from 2014 to 2015 has evidenced strong increases (from approximately 326,000 monthly visits in April 2014 to 334,000 in 2015). Approximately half, or 308, of the Valencia region’s 637 hotels are in the province of Alicante. Alicante’s coastal towns have opted for a development model centered on what is known as ‘residential tourism’ or ‘property tourism’, with few exceptions, such as Benidorm and the city of Alicante; which have grown together with traditional tourism development driven on the supply of tradition hotel inventory.

Nearly 300,000 foreigners live in the province of Alicante, with the largest group being the British with about 91,000. In Q3 2014, there were a total of 6,828 property purchases in Alicante province and an astonishing 47% of them were made by foreigners. Economy: Alicante is one of the fastest-growing cities in Spain. The economy is based mainly on tourism and the beaches of the Costa Blanca. Despite the heavy economic crisis of the last few years, expectations for the overseas market in 2016 are very positive. Spain broke its previous all-time high tourism record in 2014, estimated at 63.5 million, and about 20% of all visitors travelled to r the Costa Blanca. According to the College of Notaries statistics, there was an 11% increase in the number of property purchases made by foreigners in 2014, compared to 2013, and this trend is expected to continue.
